Formica countertops are everywhere. They come in colors, patterns, and textures that mimic marble or granite. But the core material is surprisingly humble. The interior filler starts with brown paper. Manufacturers bathe this paper in amber-colored phenolic resin. Rollers apply the chemical. Then, the paper dries in an oven.
This process creates thickness. It creates strength.
The visible side is different. It uses high-grade print paper. This layer gets submerged in a vat of clear melamine resin. A wringer squeezes out the excess liquid. Finally, an overlay sheet sits on top to make it wear-resistant.
Then comes the pressure.
Hydraulic rams clamp down on the stack. They apply between 800 to 1,500 pounds of pressure per square inch. Heat melts the resins. They spread. The layers bond into a single laminate unit.
Once cooled, the slab is trimmed. The bottom is sanded rough. This allows glue to stick when you install it in your kitchen or bath.
But it degrades.
Time takes a toll. A single deep gash can ruin the look. You might think about tearing it out. Don’t.
