Why use a blowtorch instead of an arc welder?

You might look at the list of steps below and feel a little intimidated. Arc welding is often faster and more efficient because it focuses heat via electric discharge, eliminating the need to manage gas flows. But gas blowtorches still have their place. They are essential in certain fabrication processes and, surprisingly, in plumbing work. If you are working on a home renovation or DIY project that requires heating, cutting, or brazing, understanding the gas torch is non-negotiable.

Before you touch a valve, read your specific manufacturer’s instructions. Different torches have different safety protocols. The standard procedure for an oxyacetylene setup involves two main phases: ignition and shutdown.

Step-by-step: Turning on the torch

  1. Prepare the Acetylene Side

    • Turn the acetylene regulator screws out to allow gas through.
    • Slowly open the acetylene cylinder valve. Do not open it fully. Only turn it a third to a half turn.
    • Open the acetylene needle valve on the torch head.
    • Adjust the acetylene regulator to the working pressure. For most welding purposes, this is about 5 psi.
    • Close the acetylene needle valve. You need to stop the gas flow before introducing oxygen.
  2. Prepare the Oxygen Side

    • Turn the oxygen regulator screws out to allow flow.
    • Slowly open the oxygen cylinder valve until it is completely open.
    • Open the oxygen needle valve on the torch head.
    • Adjust the oxygen regulator to the best working pressure (again, around 5 psi for welding).
    • Close the oxygen needle valve.
  3. Safety Check and Ignition

    • Pause. Test for leaks in all valves and hoses.
    • Open the acetylene needle valve to release gas.
    • Lighting the Torch : If your torch lacks an internal spark ignition device, use a friction lighter. Hold it about one inch from the tip.
    • Wait for the black smoke to clear.
    • Slowly open the oxygen needle valve.

A neutral flame is the standard preference. It is created by equal parts of acetylene and oxygen. Adjusting the oxygen needle valve changes the flame type, so watch the color and shape closely.

How to turn off the torch correctly

Shutting down is just as important as starting up. Doing it in the wrong order can leave dangerous pressure in your lines.

  1. Close the acetylene needle valve first. This extinguishes the flame.
  2. Close the oxygen needle valve.
  3. Turn off the acetylene cylinder valve, followed by the oxygen cylinder valve.
  4. Open the acetylene needle valve until the gauges read zero pressure. Then, turn out the pressure adjusting screws on the acetylene regulator and close the needle valve again. This drains any residual acetylene pressure from the hoses and torch head.
  5. Repeat the drain process for the oxygen side: open the needle valve until gauges read zero, turn out the regulator screws, and close the valve.

Which tool is right for your home project?

If you are planning a DIY renovation, ask yourself if you actually need a gas torch. Arc welding is often more precise and faster for structural work. However, if you are dealing with plumbing, copper piping, or specific fabrication tasks, the blowtorch is the tool you need.

The key is discipline. The steps seem long, but they are mechanical. Practice the shutdown sequence until it is muscle memory. Never skip the leak check. And remember, safety gear is not optional when you are dealing with high-temperature gas and open flames.
