The heat dies. Or worse, it kicks on and then just shuts off after a few minutes. You check the thermostat. It’s set correctly. You wait. Nothing. Finally, you head to the basement or utility closet, and there it is: the breaker has flipped again.
This is the most common complaint for electric furnace owners. Unlike gas units that deal with pilots, thermocouples, and gas valves, electric heating is brutally simple. It’s just resistors getting hot. But simplicity doesn’t mean it’s immune to problems. In fact, the fewer moving parts, the more frustrating it is when they fail silently.
If you’re staring at a blinking light or a cold house, don’t call a pro just yet. Most electric furnace failures are minor. You can fix them with a screwdriver and a multimeter. Here is how to troubleshoot an electric furnace before you spend money on a service call.
Step 1: The Easy Stuff (And Don’t Skip It)
Before you open any panels, check the basics. It sounds cliché because it’s true.
Check the Thermostat
Is it actually set to “Heat”? Is the fan on “Auto” or “On”? Sometimes the battery dies in a digital thermostat, causing erratic behavior. Replace the batteries. If your thermostat is old and analog, turn the dial up and listen. Do you hear the click? That’s the switch engaging. If you don’t hear it, the thermostat might be dead.
Check the Air Filter
This is the silent killer of furnaces. A clogged filter restricts airflow. When airflow drops, the heat exchanger or heating elements get too hot. The safety switches trip to prevent a fire. It’s a cheap, easy fix. Pull the filter out. If it looks like a snowstorm inside the ductwork, replace it. Try running the furnace with a fresh filter. If it stays on, you had an airflow problem.
Check the Breaker
Go to your electrical panel. Locate the breaker for the furnace. It’s usually a double-pole 240-volt breaker (two handles tied together). Flip it fully to “Off,” then back to “On.” If it trips immediately, you have a hard short. Stop. You need an electrician. If it stays on, you might have a temporary overload. But wait five minutes for the system to cool down before trying again.
Step 2: Listen to the Blower Motor
When the thermostat calls for heat, what happens first? You should hear the blower motor start up. This is critical. Electric furnaces must have airflow over the heating elements before they engage. If the blower doesn’t start, the elements won’t heat up. This is a safety feature.
If the blower hums but doesn’t spin:
– The motor might be seized due to lack of lubrication.
– The start capacitor could be weak (more on this later).
– The motor bearings might be shot.
If the blower doesn’t hum at all:
– Check if the furnace door panel is fully closed. Most units have a safety switch (door switch) that cuts power to the blower if the panel is off. Push the panel in firmly.
