Most people think cacti are tough enough to survive on tap water and hope. That is only half true. Old, established plants that are actively pushing out new growth? They can benefit from a dilute liquid fertilizer. But here is the catch. You have to be careful. One wrong move and you burn the roots. Succulents are no exception to this rule. They are not invincible.
Why Origin Matters More Than Brand
Before you even uncap a bottle, you need to know where your plant came from. Each plant is different. The origin tells you everything about its fertilizing requirements. Look at the label. Check the tag. Research the specific species.
Succulents are accustomed to having it tough. In the wild, they survive in harsh conditions with scarce nutrients. If you aren’t sure they can use help, don’t fertilize. Period. Overfeeding is a faster way to kill a cactus than underwatering. It rots the roots. It stops growth. It creates a mess you cannot clean up.
The Warm and Wet Exception
There is a nuance here. If you are growing your succulents in a warm and wet environment, the rules change slightly. They will need more fertilizer. But use restraint. Even in ideal conditions, their metabolism does not run at maximum capacity year-round.
Use a diluted solution. Half-strength is usually the sweet spot. Stronger concentrations will shock the plant. The salts in fertilizer build up in the soil over time. This changes the pH. It locks out other nutrients. You end up with a plant that looks fine but is actually starving. Dilute it. Water it through. Watch for runoff. That is your signal to stop.
Pests and Diseases Lurking
Occasionally, cacti and succulents may become afflicted by a variety of pests or diseases. Mealybugs love the crevices. Spider mites thrive in dry heat. Fungus gnats hang out in damp soil. If your plant is struggling, it might not be a nutrient issue. It could be an infestation.
Check the stems. Look under the leaves. Inspect the soil surface.
