Some of these units are ugly industrial boxes. If you care about how your living room looks, pay attention to the flame pattern. Get one with a large viewing glass. Some models even have ceramic logs that mimic a traditional wood-burning fireplace.

Finishes vary. You can get enamel, tile, or marble fronts. Yes, there are models with 24-karat gold trim. Probably not worth it unless you’re trying to impress a specific group of people, but it’s out there.

For convenience, check the hopper size. If you want to light the stove in the morning and forget about it until you come home, you need a large hopper. A small hopper means you’re refilling it every few hours. That’s not automation. That’s just a different kind of chore.
